How to Protect Your Loved Ones From Respiratory Infections

1. Washing hands with soap often will protect you from germs. Your hands are usually in contact with the surface and therefore exposed to all kinds of germs. Your hands can carry germs that cause serious infections. Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly with soap and warm water to avoid posing a danger to yourself and others.

Centres for Disease Control recommends that you wash your hands for 20 seconds. By rubbing the soap breaks down grease and dirt that carry most germs. Alcohol based hand sanitizer or gel cleanser can be used as an alternative if soap and water are not available.

Your hands should be washed: – before and after your meal – before handling food – after blowing your nose / sneezing – after using the toilet – after touching contaminated / public surfaces such as tables, lift / elevator buttons, door handles / buttons, handrails, etc.

2. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. The virus is contagious and is mainly spread through secretions / water droplets. Flu viruses spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing by people who have the flu.

3. Putting on surgical masks when unwell. Wearing a surgical mask to protect others. Remember to wash your hands before putting on a mask and after throwing into the thrash bin.

4. Take your temperature

Fever is one of the first symptoms of infection, and diseases such as the flu. Fever readings (taken orally) is at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius.
